Grading Policy for Nicholas R. Howe

All final grades will be computed on a 12-point scale according to the table below, with each component of the course weighted as stated in the course syllabus. Fractional points will normally be rounded to the nearest whole number; however, the instructor reserves the option of reviewing fractional grades in the range from .4 to .6 and adjusting them according to his best judgement. Thus, a student with a weighted 12-point average of 9.57 might receive either a B or a B+. In no case will this policy result in one student receiving a lower grade than any student with an equal or lesser 12-point average.

Students who fail to complete more than a weighted 10% of the course work may, at the instructor's discretion, receive an E or other appropriate grade, regardless of their 12-point average.

Where necessary for combination with letter grades, numeric grades will be converted to the same 12-point scale using the formula below. However, the instructor reserves the option of modifying this formula on a classwide basis if the circumstances of a particular exam or assignment appear to warrant such action. (Note that the formula below implies that any score 93.34 or above corresponds to an A.)

If student scores x% on an assignment, and ...
x > 9512-point score is 12
60 <= x <= 9512-point score is 0.3*(x-55)
x < 6012-point score is 0

At the instructor's option, in exceptional cases a grade of A+ may be awarded for outstanding work. This grade will have a value of 13 on the 12-point scale.
